Moche Portrait Vessel, Young Lord
Superb example, rare form! Ancient Pre-Columbian Portrait Vessel, from the North Coast of Peru, Moche Phase IV, ca. 400-500 A.D. Hollow-molded polychrome pottery vessel depicts a young lord; realistic facial expression, with facial tatooing, ear plugs and hair ornament. Phase IV witnessed the full florescence of Moche portraiture. Not only were the greatest number of portrait head vessels made during this phase, but the quality of the portraits reached in pinnacle of artistic and technological excellence. 6-1/2"H x 8"W, intact/excellent condition.
