Exceptional Colima Dog Effigy
Ancient Pre-Columbian Dog Effigy, from West Mexico, Colima culture, ca. 250 B.C. - 250 A.D. This large, plump terracotta-red pottery puppy stands alert on all four legs and sports a wide, happy grin; large, triangular ears standing at attention, incised rounded eyes and a perky, slightly curled tail. Finely stone-polished surface with nice root marks. The Colima Dog was known to have a variety of uses throughout its centuries of existence: food source, guardian to the dead, healer, watchdog. At least two different types of Colima dogs evolved: one to be fattened up and eaten or ritually sacrificed, and another type for a watchdog and healer of the sick. 8-3/4"H x 12"L x 6-1/2"W, intact/in excellent condition. Rare to find this nice and with such a beautiful face...
